Grégory Pérez admits that you've got to have a few loose screws to grow all your grapes in the highest and rockiest sites in Bierzo. Crazy he may be, but we thank him for his efforts! Pérez's entry level Mencía--which takes in a splash of Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouschet) for brightness and crunch--comes from multiple parcels of 30-60 year old vines dotted around Valtuille and Villafranca del Bierzo. To produce something pure and juicy, Pérez de-stems 90% of the fruit, and ferments wild in stainless-steel vats. Fragrant and spicy, with good flesh yet powdery structure, this could be a top-notch Pinot! Expect loads of racy, black cherry, peppercorn, ripe strawberry and iodine and a long, perfumed and chalky close. Simply outstanding value.
