Just across the road from the Watervale cemetery, with headstones listing a district who’s who, is a block of 20 year old shiraz. These vines are really hitting their straps to produce elegant perfumed fruit from the valley’s cool micro climate. An attractive crimson robe with purple tints leads you into fragrance of sage, oregano, hyssop, chocolate and cranberry.
clos Clare is the label of Sam and Tom Barry, grandsons of Clare Valley legend Jim Barry. The family has decades of experience under its belt making some of the region’s greatest reds—and also being at the forefront with Clare’s signature white grape: Riesling. The Riesling is grown on a small section of the Florita vineyard, one of Australia's most celebrated Riesling sites. The brothers also make delightful single-vineyard expressions of Clare Valley Shiraz and Grenache - both underrated bargains.

Today, this incomparable wine is made by Sam Barry (Jim Barry’s grandson) and it is all about excitement – from the tender yet racy nose to the pellucid, glassy palate and beyond to a breakneck, high-drama finish. I have followed this wine for just short of twenty years and it has never failed to move me.
