- The Delta Pinot Noir was harvested from the Delta Farm vineyard, located on the south side of Marlborough’s Wairau Valley, first established in 1848 and purchased for wine production in 2000 by the Delta Wine Company. The Delta Pinot Noir vineyard comprises 27ha, planted in the best of Dijon clones in 2002. The vineyard’s low clay soil and elevation, plus Marlborough’s warm days, cool nights, excellent quality of light and constant breeze make this site ideal for producing top quality Pinot Noir.
Clones 115 and 777 were harvested, then each clone was held cold in the winery for four days prior to fermentation. Cultured yeasts were used for the primary alcoholic fermentation during which the fermenting must was hand plunged six times daily and then up to eight times daily during the height of fermentation. When dry, each batch was pressed to tank, settled and then racked off gross lees to seasoned French oak and some to tank. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation before being blended and gently prepared for bottling. Drinking beautifully from release date, this wine can be enjoyed young, or with careful cellaring will mature into a more complex wine that can be enjoyed for the next five years. It is well matched with spring lamb.
Immediate lift of charred spices, black plum and Dutch licorice, with hints of black olive, cranberries, blueberries and cassis adding complexity. A sense of lightness and freshness to the array of characters that give an elegance to the style and vintage. Richness of fruit on the palate is balanced by bright natural acidity and fine tannins. Hints of savouriness and earthiness from the whole bunch component provide further complexity through the palate and elegant finish. A harmonious wine that will reward cellaring for 3 – 5 years.

Moderately dark ruby-red colour with some depth, lighter on the edge. The nose has a firm core with good depth of dark cherry and raspberry fruit with suggestions of plums and liquorice. The fruit is fresh and vibrant, unfolding a very delicate thread of dark and fresh herbs adding interest. Medium-full bodied, the palate has an elegantly concentrated hearth with deep raspberry fruit along with notes of liquorice, spices and plums. The fruit is sweet and rich and underlined by fine, grainy tannin extraction and structure, with balanced acidity lending energy. The wine carries positively to a long, lingering, fruit-focussed finish. This is a fresh, elegantly concentrated, youthful Pinot Noir with cherry, raspberry, liquorice and plum fruit flavours on a fine, grainy-structured palate with plenty of vitality. Match with pasta, pizza, poultry and pork over the next 3-4 years. Pinot Noir fruit, clones 115 and 777 from the ‘Delta Farm’ vineyard, fully destemmed and fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 10 months, half in French oak and half in tank. 17.5+/20
