This wine estate in Langenlois is one of the most treasured in the Austrian wine scene. This Grüner Veltliner is a boundless pleasure and a wine for many occasions. It’s fresh and juicy, full of all the exotic fruits alongside white blossoms, crisp acidity and great balance. This is one more-ish wine.

Fred Loimer studied winemaking at Klosterneuburg and worked in Germany’s Nahe and the Schug winery in California before returning in 1997 to his family’s estate in Langenlois within the greater Kamptal area. A year later Fred purchased the former cellar of the Haindorf Castle on top of which he constructed a modern black cube symbolizing his love for modern elegance, reflected in his wines.

In the vineyard Fred follows a high density regime (6000 vines per hectare) to contain yields. The vines are trained low but the canopies allowed to grow high. In the cellar Fred relies on spontaneous fermentation and extended time on lees but says he works without a standard ‘recipe’ in order to be free to adapt from year to year, and from grape to grape.

Fred began practicing biodynamics in 2006 and is a founding member of Respekt, a certifying body for biodynamic viticulture in Austria.

This describes the weather conditions in general in 2018. February and March were very colder months. After an unusually warm January, the cold temperatures in February and March led to a later bud break – which meant that, in contrast to the prior two years, there was no damage caused by late frosts. Then came the second warmest Spring since 1767; this allowed for the vegetation to speed up significantly. One of the earliest flowerings ever recorded had been completed in most wine regions by the end of May. This vegetative head start held its own even during the hot Summer. While June was warm and brought moderate rainfall, the month of July was hot and delivered periods of pronounced heat and even drought. This affected especially the Weinviertel region. Irrigation – where possible – and other viticultural measures were urgently needed to protect young plants and shallow-rooted vineyards from stress overload. The harvest was already underway in August, although a cold air front arrived at the end of the month, setting the scene for a cooler picking period. Then came some unpleasant side effects - thunderstorms and heavy rain - which forced a partial interruption to the harvest. Fortunately, a mild, sunny and mostly dry September heralded the harvest’s end. Picking was basically completed at the beginning of October. Even though October was warmer than usual with above-average temperatures in many areas, the grapes already were spending most of it in the cellars for vinification of this very good vintage.

AROMA
Intense spicy aromas of ground white pepper and cardamom along with a whiff of yellow apple.

PALATE
Vibrant mouthfeel even with its lean body structure. On the palate are notes of greengage and dried pineapple - lovely fruitiness with graceful acidity. Good balance and tension. A discreet and elegant tarty touch on the finish.

FOOD MATCHING
Pasta dishes with light meats.
