Our riesling find of the year so far! Sleek, mineral, zippy, fresh and oh so long. One of the most enjoyable Reisling's we have had in quite some time. Yum!

  • As one of Germany's oldest wineries, the history of this iconic estate dates back to 966, when wines were mainly made for the nearby Monastery. Fast forward to now, Carl von Schubert and his son Maximin are leading the estate in the fifth and sixth generation today, carefully managing three of the most highly regarded Grand Cru vineyards in the region: Abtsberg, Bruderberg and Herrenberg.

The Grapes for the Riesling Alte Reben come from our two biggest vineyards ABTSBERG and HERRENBERG. The ABTSBERG is the most famous and most steepest vineyard the Estate owns. It is located right in front of the Castle Maximin Grünhaus and has up to 70% of steepness with a blue devon slate soil. The HERRENBERG is bigger than the ABTSBERG and dominated by red devon slate soil. Both vineyards are owned completely by the family von Schubert and are therefore hold by monopole.

Cool and fresh bouquet which already promises great juicyness on the palate. Aromas of peaches, ripe apples, red cassis and lime fruits dominate the smell, joined by fine herbal hints. On the palate the wine is concentrated, percise and juicy. The perfect balance between sugar and acidity makes your mouth watering. The long finish leaves impressions of salty minerality.

    Variety: Riesling 100%
    Region: Mosel, Germany
    Vintage: 2016
    Age of Vines: 30-50 years
    Alcohol: 11.5%

  • 92 Points - James Suckling
"Still a bit leesy (it was just bottled) but there really is an old vine intensity here and the mineral character is way more intense than most wines claiming to be made from old vines. Another wine with great aging potential although it is already delicious."
