Sparkling Wine of the Year (Under $25) - Tyson Stelzer
Bright lifted aromas of rose petals, fresh strawberry, spice and pouring cream. This wine represents the beauty of Tasmanian Pinot Noir, supported by the fresh zesty structure of Chardonnay. The palate is layered and rich, due to bottling aging on lees, balanced by refreshing natural acidity creating a sparkling wine of texture and poise..
Selectively harvested in the cold morning hours across the Pipers River Region. The cool fruit was very carefully whole bunch pressed extracted only the most delicate juice. Cool fermented to retain the exemplary Tasmanian fruit characters and blended to create a wonderfully complex wine, the wine then underwent secondary fermentation in bottle to create a classical Tasmanian sparkling rose. Aged for over a year before release this wine has complexity and creaminess that only bottle fermentation of sparkling wines can deliver.

No, my score is not a misprint. Ninth Island has landed in pink guise, and no surprise, with rosé queen Nat Fryar entering the building to join the team of wizards at Piper’s Brook. The result resoundingly meets every lofty expectation, from its gracefully pale salmon hue through its elegant restraint and delightful expression of pinot noir’s red cherries and strawberries. Then it delivers much more than anyone anticipated, with delightfully complex allure of pink pepper and beetroot and a magnificently creamy palate texture, the blessing of a year of lees age. And then more. The finish holds integrity nothing short of shocking for this price, with remarkable line and length that hold unwavering for thirty seconds and beyond. If there is anything to nitpick it is a little more dosage on the finish than it really needs, but at this price it’s not out of place, and nothing a light chill can’t deal with. This is an astonishingly sophisticated sparkling rosé with a report card that reads more like a $60 cuvée.

Made from pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot meunier and aged for more than a year on its lees. Full salmon-pink hue; strawberry, nettle aromas with smoky, nutty overtones. Crisp and tangy in the mouth, with refreshing acidity, finishing soft and fruity.

This is the budget label of Pipers Brook Vineyard, whose wines have recently been restored to their former status. A full salmon-pink colour leads into a bouquet of smoky strawberry, rose petals and dry straw, and the taste is crisp and lively with well balanced acidity and a soft texture. Remarkable value.
