The Shiraz was sourced from and old vine, single block planted on volcanic red soils. The Pinot Noir was sourced from our 4 & 8 Acres block located here at the winery, which was planted in late 1960’s. The growing season for the 2021 vintage was one of the wettest in a decade, with over 1,000mm of rainfall received in the 12 months prior to harvest. A cool summer gave us even, stress-free ripening; all of the fruit had wonderful flavours balanced by a high natural acidity. This blend of Shiraz (90%) and Pinot Noir (10%) is a modern interpretation of the great ‘Hunter River Burgundy’ styles made famous in the mid 1900s. Both varietals were vinified and matured separately before being blended in June, and then bottled in September.Attractive, vibrant colour and a pretty aroma that jumps out of the glass. The palate is bright and approachable, with mouth filling fruit, soft tannins and bright acidity.

"I love this! A hark to the past as a harbinger of the present. A classic 'Hunter River Burgundy' blend (90/10% shiraz/pinot) dating back to the greats of the 1950s and '60s. But in these hands, appropriated to the sassy, pulpy and limpid style that makes for delicious contemporary drinking. Best, without forfeiting regional DNA. Hunter varnish, bing cherry, persimmon, Seville orange and clove. Expanding sweetness through the middle. An effortless finish of silken tannin and juicy acidity. Lovely drinking." (Oct 2021)
