A staff favourite here at Covert. This stunning Tassie Pinot is juicy, vibrant, aromatic and lush - a fine example of the potential of Pinot Noir in the Coal River region.
- Follow the Coal River just 3 km north from the picturesque sandstone village of Richmond in southern Tasmania and you come to Storm Bay Vineyards where the ancient tertiary clays and limestone coupled with long, slow ripening produce wines with finesse and elegance perfectly representative of Tasmania’s cool maritime climate.
Tasting Notes
2018 was an early, exuberant year with big berries and juicy flavours. The joy of pinot really comes out in this wine. It’s fresh and bright and pretty with lashings of red fruits.
Winemaking
Designed to highlight Southern Tassie’s specific flavours, most of the “winemaking” is really done in the vineyard with a careful selection of brightly flavoured clones. In the winery, a cool ferment in tank is followed by early bottling to preserve the maximum amount of primary fruit.
Food
A really young, soft cheese, some fresh bread and maybe a few olives…oh yes!
Immediate lift of charred spices, black plum and Dutch licorice, with hints of black olive, cranberries, blueberries and cassis adding complexity. A sense of lightness and freshness to the array of characters that give an elegance to the style and vintage. Richness of fruit on the palate is balanced by bright natural acidity and fine tannins. Hints of savouriness and earthiness from the whole bunch component provide further complexity through the palate and elegant finish. A harmonious wine that will reward cellaring for 3 – 5 years.
